“And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7“And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Getting parents on board is always a key part of VBS and this year is no different. While some parents and caregivers are eager to send kids to VBS (or anywhere for that matter) some may be a little apprehensive. In either case, promotion and communication about your VBS will be critical as summer approaches. Help parents see the importance of the relationship-building aspect of VBS. Weary parents will be grateful that they don’t have to do it alone!

Create a parent/caregiver survey.

You don’t know what you don’t know! Avoid assumptions about what parents think or expect from your program by asking them directly. The survey answers can guide your planning, creating a VBS environment that meets parents’ expectations. Here are some examples of questions you can ask:

Communicate, communicate, communicate!

Parents and caregivers don’t know what they don’t know! As you’re promoting VBS, share the steps you’re taking to create a safe and healthy environment. Include this information everywhere!

  • VBS PRO registration site
  • Press Releases
  • Email invitations
  • Facebook event posts

You might even create a parent handbook. If you’re planning an “outside the box” VBS, like virtual or neighborhood, we highly recommend creating a guide for parents, so they know what to expect from the experience. Here’s an example: Parent Handbook

Partner with parents.

Building a child’s faith can often feel like a huge responsibility for parents. Remind them that you’re there to partner with them. Use VBS as an opportunity to come alongside parents, creating a solid faith foundation that lasts long past one week!
